Pharaoh Enters An Afterlife

The bound papyrus funeral barge bearing Pharaoh and His Queen touched the quay at Memphis. Wind blasted constant and hot from the desert, bowing the procession, scouring the shorn pallbearers with grit. Underground, down the Hall of Sighs, fresh painted glyphs in bas relief stood witness to His glory.

In the Chamber of the King, a priest placed a scarab onto Pharaoh’s right eye.

A Santa Anna surged hot and dry from the Mojave, sandblasting the windshields of downshifting overnight rigs ascending Cajon Pass and rattling the windows on the east side of the house.

Something was in his eye. Something alive. He felt the weight of it squirming and tickling, the movement furtive and portentous. He plucked the thing away feeling a crisp grid work of carapace and tangle of wiry legs overlaying a strangely fat, soft yet urgent life throb between his fingers as he tossed it aside, and upon doing so he awoke in the dark. Something… important. He leaned over to the nightstand, switched the reading light on and looked, seeking the object he’d pulled from his eye.

His queen slept beside him, pale. And clinging to the bed sheet enshrouding the soft curve of her shoulder, a black widow, the abdomen big as an acorn and liquid black, black as the darkness before the world, and the underside tilted his way revealing the sharp hourglass red as a stoplight, red as a dying sun. Momentarily stunned, the spider began to revive, the legs unfolding to find purchase on the sheet.

He snatched a magazine from the nightstand and deftly flicked the widow down on to the coverlet, then swiftly folded the magazine and swatted the spider, killing it. He slid the magazine under the crushed body, leaned out and tapped it into a wastebasket next to the stand. His queen still slept, her dark hair a blissful tide spilled across the white pillow. Pharaoh rubbed his eye, no sign of harm, switched off the light, fell back to sleep and forgot about everything.
